Frequently asked questions
Transport Managersupport.
Support is adapted to the role, licence and size of the business.
What does Transport Manager support cover?
It can include reviewing compliance systems, responsibilities, records and performance across vehicle maintenance, driver management, drivers’ hours and operator licensing.
Can a Transport Manager delegate compliance tasks?
Individual tasks can be carried out by other competent people, but the nominated Transport Manager retains responsibility for managing and checking that the work is completed properly.
How much time should a Transport Manager spend on the operation?
The time needs to be sufficient for continuous and effective management. The appropriate commitment depends on the fleet, operating centres, work and level of support within the business.
Can you support a restricted licence holder?
Yes. A restricted licence does not normally require a nominated Transport Manager, but the operator still needs effective systems and can benefit from transport-management support.
What happens if a nominated Transport Manager leaves?
The change should be reported promptly. A Traffic Commissioner may allow time to nominate a replacement, but any period of grace is discretionary and the operator should act without delay.
See the current Traffic Commissioner guidance for Transport Managers.
