The applicable rules depend on the vehicle, journey and type of work. These answers provide general guidance rather than a decision on a particular set of records.
What does tachograph analysis look for?
Analysis can identify potential drivers’ hours infringements, missing or incomplete records, unusual activity and recurring patterns that may require investigation or management action.
How often should digital tachograph data be downloaded?
Current DVSA guidance states that operators must download vehicle-unit data at least every 90 calendar days and driver-card data every 28 days. Downloads may need to happen sooner where necessary to prevent data loss or in certain circumstances.
What should happen when an infringement is identified?
The circumstances should be reviewed with the driver, the cause considered and proportionate action recorded. Repeated issues may indicate a need for further instruction, training, scheduling changes or closer monitoring.
Can tachograph analysis replace management oversight?
No. Analysis provides evidence and identifies concerns, but the operator and Transport Manager still need to review the findings, take reasonable steps to prevent breaches and check whether corrective action has worked.
Can you review reports produced by our existing analysis system?
Yes. We can discuss the reports and information already available, help identify the important findings and support the management response. The precise scope will depend on the system, data and records provided.
